The Bureau of Overseas Buildings Operations (OBO) oversees the global building program for the U. S. Department of State. Collaborating with various offices, foreign affairs agencies, and Congress, OBO establishes priorities for the design, construction, acquisition, maintenance, and sale of real properties. As the sole manager of real estate for U. S. diplomatic facilities abroad, OBO manages a portfolio that includes 285 global missions and over 80 million square feet of operational property. OBO's mission is to ensure safe, secure, and efficient facilities that represent the U. S. government to host nations and support the Department's foreign policy goals.
The Program Development, Coordination, and Support Directorate (PDCS) is tasked with the design, coordination, and management of OBO's construction and renovation initiatives.
The Office of Design and Engineering (DE) offers expertise across various domains including architecture, landscape architecture, interior design, sustainability, and multiple engineering disciplines. Working in conjunction with Planning and Real Estate, DE develops and updates the Space Requirements Programs (SRP), and oversees design coordination from planning through construction phases. DE also monitors the performance of architecture-engineering contractors and serves as the building code official, ensuring the adequacy of construction documents and issuing building permits. The Energy group (NRG) provides multifaceted expertise for high-performance buildings, encompassing planning, design, engineering, construction, utility management, and maintenance for OBO projects.
This position will support the Bureau of Overseas Buildings Operations, Program Development, Coordination and Support Directorate, Office of Design and Engineering, Architectural Design Division (OBO/PDCS/DE/AD).
