RequirementsHonorable Discharge from U. S. Military Service. Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record. Prior experience in a mechanical or technical field. Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic abilities. Capacity to thrive in a fast-paced dealership service environment. Willingness to undergo a background check and drug screening. Preferred Skills (Not Required)Basic automotive maintenance or repair experience. Familiarity with diagnostic tools and hand tools. Experience working with engines, electrical systems, or mechanical equipment. ASE certifications or technical training (a plus).

Kia Country of Charleston in Charleston, SC welcomes Military Veterans with mechanical skills to apply for the Automotive Technician Apprenticeship. This position is part of the Kia Veterans Technician Apprenticeship Program (VTAP), designed by Kia America to help Veterans build a career in automotive service.

Through VTAP, Veterans gain hands-on dealership experience during a year-long, competency-based apprenticeship. The program leads to Kia Service Technician certification. Apprentices work full-time at a Kia dealership, receiving structured training, guidance, and access to the tools needed to develop as technicians.

This apprenticeship is GI Bill® approved. Eligible Veterans may receive a Monthly Housing Allowance (MHA) while participating in the program.

As an Automotive Technician Apprentice, work alongside experienced technicians and service staff to build the technical and practical skills needed for diagnosing, servicing, and repairing Kia vehicles.

Key Responsibilities

  • Diagnose, maintain, and repair Kia vehicles, including engines, transmissions, steering, suspension, brakes, HVAC, and electrical systems.
  • Perform inspections, diagnostics, and mechanical repairs using Kia procedures and diagnostic equipment.
  • Complete repair orders and warranty paperwork according to Kia and dealership standards.
  • Test drive vehicles and confirm repairs using diagnostic tools and equipment.
  • Communicate with service advisors and shop foremen to support a positive customer experience.
  • Keep the work area safe, organized, and efficient, following dealership safety protocols.
