Qualifications

Must be able to secure and maintain a U. S. DOE Q-level security clearance, requiring U. S. citizenship. Bachelor's Degree in Nuclear Engineering, Physics, or a closely related scientific field, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Extensive knowledge and experience working in a nuclear facility, nuclear reactor, or similarly complex or highly regulated environments. Demonstrated application of technical, analytical, and decision-making skills with a solid track record in conducting criticality safety evaluations or research. Proficient in computer applications and radiation transport software (e.g., COG, MCNP, SCALE). Experience in preparing technical documentation in compliance with established protocols (e.g., criticality safety evaluations, safety basis calculations, design calculations, and drawings). Familiarity with DOE orders, national consensus standards, and LLNL policies related to criticality safety.

About the job

We are excited to announce an opening for a Criticality Safety Engineer at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). In this role, you will play a pivotal part in the design, development, and testing of nuclear equipment and systems that involve fissionable materials crucial to LLNL operations. You will also support various projects aligned with the Department of Energy (DOE) Nuclear Criticality Safety Program. This position is situated within the Nuclear Criticality Safety Division, which operates under the Environment, Safety, and Health (ES&H) Directorate.

The role will be filled at either level depending on the knowledge and relevant experience assessed by the hiring team. If hired at the higher level, additional responsibilities will be assigned as outlined below.

Please note that this position requires full-time on-site presence due to the nature of the work.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct criticality safety evaluations in compliance with DOE-STD-3007 and LLNL administrative procedures, and actively participate in the design and review processes for new or modified equipment and operating procedures.
  • Perform thorough walk-through inspections and annual reviews of operational documents, ensuring consistency with criticality safety evaluations and proper implementation of criticality safety controls.
  • Engage in technical/scientific assignments addressing moderate to complex problems that necessitate independent analysis and creativity, while providing invaluable support to facility management, engineers, and scientists in research and development projects or ongoing operations.
  • Collect and analyze data to support various work activities, presenting results through documentation, calculations, recommendations, corrective actions, or designs.
  • Devise innovative solutions to moderately complex problems, contributing to the achievement of project and organizational goals.
  • Regularly travel to the Nevada National Security Sites.
  • Facilitate Fundamentals of Criticality Safety training courses for personnel.
  • Execute other duties as assigned.

Additional Responsibilities at the SES.3 Level:

  • Develop and present technical reports to LLNL management and various internal and external stakeholders.
  • Deliver formal on-the-job training and provide complex consultations on criticality safety information to personnel handling fissile materials, designers, and other clients.
  • Interpret and implement DOE regulations, national consensus criticality safety standards, and laboratory policies related to criticality safety, while offering guidance to internal customers.
