Role overview
The Crowd Technical Director focuses on building large-scale crowd simulations and animations for high-end visual effects films. Working alongside Supervisors and department Leads, this role shapes the movement and behavior of digital crowds, ensuring each sequence matches the creative vision of Framestore’s projects.
Daily work includes developing simulations with a mix of proprietary and industry-standard tools. Collaboration is key, with regular interaction across Modelling, Rigging, Animation, Motion Capture, and Lighting teams to integrate crowd elements smoothly into final shots. The position is well suited to those who enjoy solving creative and technical challenges, and who are interested in advancing new tools and techniques for visual effects.
Main responsibilities
- Execute crowd simulations based on briefs from the CG or VFX Supervisor.
- Develop locomotion and motion behaviors to create varied, believable performances.
- Assist with the development of new crowd tools and workflows.
- Maintain clear communication with Production and Leads to meet deadlines and uphold quality standards.
