Qualifications

Valid EX inspection certification (e.g., IECEx, CoPC, CompEx EX01–EX04, or equivalent).3-5 years of experience inspecting electrical installations in hazardous locations. Strong knowledge of NEC hazardous location requirements, OSHA regulations, and NFPA 70.Experience with classified areas (Class I, II, III; Division 1 & 2 / Zone 0, 1, 2). Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings and P&IDs. Experience with explosion-proof enclosures, intrinsically safe systems, cable glands, and conduit seals. Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field. Experience in oil & gas, petrochemical, or chemical manufacturing environments.

SGS is actively seeking qualified Ex-Certified Inspectors (IECex Ex01-Ex04) to join our team across various locations in the USA. Assignments will be provided as needed, with compensation based on hours worked and applicable costs incurred. The duration of assignments may range from a single day to several weeks.

As an inspector, you will need to enter into an independent contractor/sub-contractor agreement (1099) with SGS North America Inc. Although hours are not guaranteed and work may not be available in your area at all times, being on our roster ensures you will be one of the first contacted when opportunities arise.

We are looking for skilled Ex-Certified Inspectors to conduct inspections, verify, and ensure compliance with explosion-protected (Ex) electrical and mechanical equipment utilized in hazardous (classified) locations. The ideal candidate will possess certification in hazardous area inspection (e.g., IECEx, CompEx, or equivalent), and have a deep understanding of NEC, NFPA, and OSHA standards applicable within the United States.

Responsibilities include:

  • Performing inspections of explosion-proof and intrinsically safe equipment in hazardous locations.
  • Ensuring compliance with:
    • NEC (National Electrical Code) Articles 500–516
    • NFPA standards
    • OSHA regulations
    • Applicable IECEx / ATEX standards (if required)
  • Conducting initial, periodic, and detailed inspections according to established schedules.
  • Reviewing engineering drawings, hazardous area classifications, and installation documentation.
  • Identifying non-conformities and recommending corrective measures.
  • Preparing comprehensive inspection reports and maintaining compliance documentation.
  • Assisting with audits, regulatory reviews, and safety investigations.
  • Providing technical support to maintenance and engineering teams.
  • Ensuring that all work adheres to company safety policies.
