Elmhurst University is actively seeking a dedicated adjunct faculty member to instruct an undergraduate course in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for the Spring 2027 semester.
Course Title: GEO 207 - Foundations of GIS
This course serves as a foundational introduction to spatial cognition, conceptualization, and representation. Students will investigate physical and cultural landscapes utilizing diverse mapping and geovisualization methods and software tools. The geographic lens will be employed to analyze a wide array of topics, including retail location strategy, crime patterns, access to healthcare, and environmental justice. No prerequisites are necessary for this course.
Position Status: Exempt
Salary Range: The compensation for this position ranges from $3,800 to $4,000 for a typical 1.0 credit (4 semester hour) course, with new part-time faculty starting at $3,800 (Adjunct Level 1).
Work Location: This position is not eligible for remote work.
Responsibilities
- Develop and plan the course curriculum to meet established learning outcomes.
- Ensure all course materials are prepared and uploaded to the delivery platform (currently Blackboard) prior to the first class session.
- Be present for all scheduled course meetings, including the final exam period, and provide additional office hours for student inquiries. The delivery method is primarily in-person (online synchronous may be considered).
- Track student performance, grade assignments, and post grades on Blackboard promptly.
- Submit midterm and final grades to the University by specified deadlines.
- Complete necessary faculty training (e.g., cybersecurity training) during the semester by the due dates.

Minimum Qualifications
- Master's degree in geosciences, GIS, or a closely related field.
- Proficient in GIS technology and its applications.
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with ArcGIS Online.
- Over two years of relevant professional experience and previous teaching experience.
Working Conditions/Physical Requirements
This position typically operates in an indoor environment, with limited exposure to outdoor weather conditions. The work is primarily sedentary and requires the ability to remain stationary for extended periods. Essential abilities include effective communication (speaking and hearing) for both in-person and virtual interactions, as well as using both close and distance vision for reading materials.
