WORKING LOCATION
We operate offices in the USA, the United Kingdom, and Australia. This is a full-time position based in our Kidlington and Harwell offices. Our flexible work policy allows full-time employees to work remotely up to 2 days a week, subject to operational needs.
POSITION OVERVIEW
We are on the lookout for a Senior Research Software Engineer who will play a crucial role in designing and developing software across the entire quantum control stack, facilitating the high-performance operation of our quantum computing and sensing technologies. This position encompasses low-level hardware integration, real-time control systems, waveform generation, calibration automation, experiment orchestration, and scalable data pipelines. You will collaborate closely with physicists and hardware engineers to transform experimental needs into robust, deterministic, and extensible control frameworks. The ideal candidate will possess extensive systems programming expertise, experience with hardware-adjacent or real-time systems, and a solid foundation in scientific or high-performance computing, along with a fervor for creating the core software that powers next-generation quantum innovations.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Design, develop, and implement reliable, maintainable, scalable, and fault-tolerant backend services and frameworks for controlling and calibrating our quantum hardware.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including scientists, opto-mechanical engineers, and electrical engineers, to tackle complex challenges and deliver top-quality software solutions.
- Empower teams by imparting engineering and programming best practices, enabling them to create the tools they need.
- Mentor and support junior engineers, nurturing their professional development and enhancing the overall technical capabilities of the team.
- Lead code and design reviews, promoting engineering best practices and fostering a culture of quality and collaboration.
- Provide support and troubleshoot all layers of the control stack, from real-time embedded kernels to distributed and cloud-based services.
