The New York City Commission on Human Rights (CCHR) is dedicated to enforcing the city's Human Rights Law through comprehensive measures including education, outreach, and enforcement. Our mission is to tackle both historical and current inequities, fostering an environment where every individual can thrive, free from discrimination.
Our proactive approach includes training, policy initiatives, and systematic investigations to unearth patterns of discrimination across various sectors, including housing, employment, and public accommodations. We utilize a range of enforcement tools such as investigations, litigation, and mediation to address discrimination claims effectively.
We are currently seeking an Agency Attorney I to join our Law Enforcement Bureau (LEB). In this role, you will be instrumental in enforcing the New York City Human Rights Law through pre-complaint interventions, investigations, mediations, settlements, and litigation.
Key Responsibilities:
- Manage a case docket focused on housing, employment, healthcare, and public accommodation discrimination cases in designated New York City zip codes.
- Conduct interviews with individuals alleging discrimination claims and engage in pre-complaint interventions, investigations, and file complaints where necessary.
- Investigate public discrimination claims and potential pattern violations for Commission-initiated actions.
- Negotiate resolutions for claims, draft settlement agreements, and monitor compliance.
- Represent the Commission in litigation from initial probable cause determination through to hearings division referrals.
- Appear before an Administrative Law Judge at conferences, engage in discovery, and manage depositions.
- Handle trial litigations, culminating in Administrative Law Judge recommendations and Commission orders.
- Collaborate with the Community Relations Bureau to conduct trainings and develop coordinated strategies to eliminate systemic discrimination.
- Serve as a representative of the Commission at community events and professional gatherings.
- Perform additional duties as required to support the Law Enforcement Bureau's objectives.
Additional Information:
1. Work hours are Monday to Friday, from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
2. Flexibility to work evenings and/or weekends may be required to fulfill job responsibilities.
