About the job
The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) plays a vital role in enriching the environment and safeguarding public health for all New Yorkers. We are proud to provide a staggering 1.1 billion gallons of high-quality drinking water while effectively managing wastewater and stormwater, and minimizing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. As the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the nation, with nearly 6,000 dedicated employees, our mission is supported by a robust water supply system comprising 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes across a sprawling 2,000 square mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the City.
Our Bureau of Engineering Design & Construction (BEDC) oversees a vast portfolio of capital projects valued at $35 billion, with an additional $13.6 billion projected under our 10-year commitment plan. The initiatives we implement are crucial to maintaining and enhancing the exemplary water supply system DEP is known for.
The Water System Capital Program (WSCP) is responsible for the planning, design, construction management, and construction necessary to upgrade and maintain the Bureau of Water Supply’s essential infrastructure. As part of our mission, BEDC delivers a significant multibillion-dollar capital program to provide new infrastructure and reconstruct existing assets, ensuring the integrity, continuity, and high quality of our water supply. Our work encompasses a vast network including wastewater treatment plants, dams, bridges, shafts, reservoirs, tunnels, pumping stations, ultraviolet disinfection systems, filtration systems, and related facilities throughout New York City and its watershed.
We are currently seeking an Assistant Project Manager for the WSCP directorate, located in the upstate watershed. Under the direct supervision of the Accountable Manager, the successful candidate will assist in overseeing water and wastewater system projects within the watershed, which extends 125 miles north and west of the City. These projects may include dams, aqueducts, wastewater treatment plants, bridges, roadways, and various miscellaneous infrastructure projects. The Assistant Project Manager will be responsible for planning, coordinating, and directing the implementation of design and construction projects within the NYC watershed. Responsibilities include monitoring permit requirements, assisting in resolving project-related issues, conducting reliable field condition surveys, and preparing detailed reports based on physical observations. Additionally, the candidate will conduct thorough reviews of contract documents, codes, and regulations to ensure compliance with project specifications. Active participation in field investigations to develop alternative approaches and solutions will also be required, along with collaboration with the construction management team to perform inspections of construction activities. Attendance at all required environmental meetings is expected.
