As a Patient Care Technician at Northwestern Medicine, you will embody our mission, vision, and values while adhering to our Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program. You will play a crucial role in upholding our organizational policies, procedures, guidelines, and all relevant regulatory and accreditation standards.
Your primary responsibility will be to assist and support the Professional Registered Nurse in delivering both direct and indirect patient care. Operating under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse, you will be an essential member of our unit staff.
Key Responsibilities:
- Direct Patient Care Activities:
- Assist with the admission, transfer, and discharge processes.
- Measure and record vital signs including temperature, pulse, respiration, weight for adults and/or neonates, height, and blood pressure.
- Monitor and document intake and output, including output from drains.
- Utilize cardiac monitoring and oximetry equipment.
- Conduct EKGs.
- Ensure adherence to infant security protocols, including accurate band placement assessments.
- Perform normal newborn hearing screenings.
- Collect capillary blood glucose samples for adults and/or neonates.
- Conduct phlebotomy as required.
- Apply Fetal Monitor equipment on pregnant patients and manage heplocks and Foley catheters.
- Administer enemas and collect various specimens (urine, stool, blood, sputum) for testing.
- Respond promptly to patient call lights, especially emergency alerts.
- Provide fresh drinking water and snacks to patients, assisting with meal preparation and feeding as needed.
- Deliver morning and evening care, including bed baths and peri-care as per established Nursing Care Procedures.
- Conduct newborn care including bathing, dressing, obtaining footprints, and assisting with feeding.
- Make occupied and unoccupied beds as needed.
- Assist with patient ambulation and instruction on using mobility aids like walkers, canes, and crutches.
- Support pre-and post-operative care, positioning patients as ordered, and applying safety equipment.
