As a vital member of our team, the Commissioning Technologist will report directly to the Commissioning Manager. This role encompasses the commissioning and testing of both primary and secondary power equipment in the field. You will maintain and troubleshoot medium to high-voltage substation power delivery equipment, including breakers, switchgears, circuit breakers, relays, and transformers. Additionally, you will mentor and educate apprentices on blueprints interpretation, risk management, and industry best practices. You will also lead the setup and operation of standard and specialized testing equipment to evaluate performance on-site.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure safety protocols are upheld while collaborating with the construction crew.
- Conduct acceptance and maintenance testing of electrical equipment.
- Oversee the installation, commissioning, and maintenance of protection and control equipment in medium to high-voltage transmission substations.
- Interpret blueprints, analyze test reports, and provide recommendations for corrective actions.
- Work on high-voltage equipment, including circuit breakers, transformers, switches, and control circuit systems for protection, indication, and monitoring.
- Supervise, mentor, and train junior technicians.
- Calibrate electronic equipment and instruments as necessary.
- Utilize various manufacturers’ test equipment, including TTR, Omicron secondary test sets, winding resistance testers, Omicron CPC 100, and CT saturators.
Qualifications
- Diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology or a Degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution.
- 1-3 years of experience in field testing and commissioning.
- Previous supervisory experience is highly desirable.
- Experience in substations with voltages of 144kV and 240kV is a significant advantage.
- Proficiency in relay testing with tools such as Omicron, GE, Manta, and Megger.
- Familiarity with all equipment typically found in high-voltage substations.
- Experience with testing software such as Omicron Test Universe, Doble M4000, AcSELerator, and Siemens Digsi is beneficial.
- Competency in using computers and spreadsheets is essential.
- A collaborative team player with robust interpersonal and communication skills.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical abilities, capable of working within strict timelines.
- Commitment to workplace safety and environmental, health, and safety considerations.
- Ability to work in adverse weather conditions and possess a valid Class 5 driver’s license.
- Comfortable working at heights and able to work independently or with minimal supervision.
