About the job
The European Endowment for Democracy (EED) is a dynamic grant-making organization established by the European Union Member States and institutions, dedicated to promoting and facilitating the advancement of democracy. Headquartered in Brussels, EED operates as an independent private law foundation.
While EED does not have regional offices in countries within its geographical mandate, it maintains a network of consultants in key areas, providing essential knowledge consultancy services, technical assistance, and logistical support. This includes outreach, monitoring, and evaluation efforts. Sudan is among the countries covered by EED's geographic mandate.
Profile
EED is seeking a dedicated consultant to enhance the operational support for Sudanese civil society and independent media over a six-month period, with the potential for extension. The ideal candidate should be based in Sudan, Uganda, or Kenya.
The selection of the consultant will be based on their reputation, experience, understanding of the country’s political developments, and the breadth of their network, which should include established and emerging civil society organizations (CSOs), social and political movements, and independent media outlets.
It is important to note that the consultant may be affiliated with a civil society organization or group but will not be eligible to receive EED support during the period of service to the EED Secretariat. This restriction applies to both individual and organizational requests for assistance.
Duties
Conducting background checks: EED will require reliable references from individuals or organizations applying for support to inform funding decisions. The consultant is expected to perform background checks as needed and provide recommendations accordingly.
Supporting grant proposal assessments and processing: EED welcomes grant requests in both Arabic and English. The consultant will be involved in assessing these requests, including evaluating content, verifying information, and conducting reference checks. Additionally, the consultant may coach applicants on refining their proposals for EED support.
Providing knowledge consultancy: EED aims to complement other donors, particularly existing EU instruments. To ensure its added value, the consultant will be expected to gather information on any current initiatives that may overlap with EED’s funding activities. Maintaining contact with the donor community and providing updates to EED will also be part of the consultant's responsibilities.
