About the job
The Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY) stands as the largest and most renowned fire department in the United States, recognized worldwide as the busiest and most skilled emergency response agency. Our primary mission is to deliver fire protection, emergency medical services, and essential public safety services to all residents and visitors across the five boroughs. Members of the FDNY are sworn to safeguard life and property while continuously educating the public on fire safety, life safety, and disaster preparedness, in addition to enforcing public safety codes. Since our establishment in 1865, we have been dedicated to making New York one of the safest large cities in the nation, a feat that requires unwavering commitment to our core values.
The Bureau of Fire Prevention plays a pivotal role in ensuring safety for citizens, visitors, and first responders by preventing loss of life and property damage due to fire and other emergencies. Our work is conducted around the clock, identifying fire and life safety hazards, creating, revising, and enforcing the New York City Fire Code, reviewing plans for critical safety systems, licensing qualified companies for fire protection system installation, certifying individuals to monitor fire safety conditions, and educating the community on fire safety. Moreover, we work closely with the Bureau of Fire Operations and the Bureau of Fire Investigations to provide support during post-fire incidents and investigations, as well as coordinating with other city agencies on fire and life safety matters. The Bureau consists of a dedicated team of Fire Protection Inspectors, attorneys, engineers, explosives experts, and Fire Officers, all united in their mission to save lives in New York City.
