Salary:
The City of New York Mayor’s Office of Equity & Racial Justice offers a competitive compensation package featuring a salary range of $100,000-$120,000 along with exceptional benefits. Final salary offers will be determined based on the candidate's experience, expertise, and other relevant factors.
The Problems You’ll Address:
As a pivotal senior leader within the organization and reporting directly to the Deputy Commissioner, the Policy Director will spearhead the design and implementation of MOERJ's policy framework. This role involves the thorough development and analytical assessment of MOERJ's policy priorities while also providing support for their execution. Collaboration with diverse teams across the agency and engagement with policy experts both within and beyond government will be essential, alongside the direct management of a policy analyst.
This position presents a unique opportunity to lead foundational initiatives while exploring new avenues for public impact in a mission-driven environment.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Direct the development and analysis of MOERJ policy priorities, including strategies and positions related to agency programs and the communities served.
- Serve as the central hub for the agency’s policy ecosystem, facilitating cross-team coordination to unify various initiatives into a coherent framework that maximizes collective impact.
- Formulate an annual legislative agenda and strategic roadmap for implementation, ensuring alignment with agency staff.
- Utilize data and research to advocate for legislative changes and foster collaborative partnerships across government.
- Act as the primary liaison for MOERJ on Intergovernmental Affairs (IGA), collaborating with colleagues to ensure agency goals align with broader governmental agendas.
- Ensure that policy positions are well-researched, strategically evaluated, and effectively advocated with stakeholders.
- Assist in the preparation for City Council testimonies, proposals, and related materials as necessary.
- Draft comments, position statements, and memoranda on proposed legislation or regulation.
- Prepare responses to public inquiries related to agency policy priorities as needed.
- Develop and deliver policy-related presentations and public-facing briefs.
- Conduct comprehensive research on policy impacts and interpret complex legislation.
- Engage in ongoing horizon scanning to identify and assess emerging policy innovations and best practices aligned with MOERJ’s mission, curating a knowledge repository to support policy work.
- Develop and manage organizational tools to track relevant policy proposals, legislative developments, and regulatory changes.
- Supervise and mentor a policy analyst, providing guidance and regular feedback on their work.
- Participate in and lead cross-divisional policy workgroups and initiatives.
- Collaborate with MOERJ colleagues and other city offices to enhance policy initiatives.
