Join Us in Shaping the Future of Veterinary Medicine!
At Paumanok Veterinary Hospital, we are committed to nurturing the next generation of veterinary professionals. As part of your academic journey, our externship program offers invaluable off-campus experiences that complement your veterinary education. This hands-on learning opportunity is crafted to enhance your readiness for a successful career in veterinary medicine.
Program Overview:
Our externship program is adaptable, allowing for durations ranging from two to eight weeks throughout the year, aligned with your academic calendar—typically spanning two to three weeks. Your schedule may include a mix of days, evenings, and weekends.
During your externship, you will engage in practical rotations under the mentorship of our veterinary team, honing your problem-solving, technical, and communication skills. You will actively participate in patient care and receive a stipend of $250 per week.
Your Responsibilities:
As an extern, you will experience a typical caseload in a small animal practice. Under the supervision of a mentor veterinarian, you will be involved in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creating diagnostic and treatment plans, assisting in surgeries, managing medical cases, delivering wellness care, and developing client communication and medical record-keeping skills.
Qualifications:
We seek enthusiastic veterinary students who are committed to upholding the professional and ethical standards of our practice. It is recommended that externship participants familiarize themselves with the Veterinary Practice Act regarding permissible duties and required supervision to ensure compliance and safety.
Professional attire and behavior are expected, along with adherence to our team values as outlined in our employee handbook.
