In 2017, more than half of the population in Sub-Saharan Africa were unbanked due to high fees, distant branches, and a general lack of card acceptance. Many individuals resort to keeping their savings under mattresses, while small business owners face exorbitant interest rates from lenders. Parents spend countless hours in lines to pay school fees in cash.
We are tackling these challenges by creating financial services that are accessible, fee-free, and universally accepted. Even in areas where essential utilities are unreliable, our platform allows users to send money seamlessly. Since launching our mobile app in Senegal in 2017, we have expanded our services across nine countries, amassing millions of users and experiencing rapid growth.

Your Role
As the Engineering Manager for Database Reliability, you will lead a pivotal team ensuring that Wave's databases are operational and scalable as our user base expands. Database reliability is a cornerstone of our operations for two key reasons:
- We are one of the fastest-growing financial services in history, presenting continuous scalability challenges.
- We serve as critical infrastructure for our users—any downtime prevents them from accessing their funds.
Therefore, maintaining a secure and dependable infrastructure is among our highest engineering priorities.
In this role, you will:
- Guide engineers in architecting, maintaining, and evolving high-performance database technologies across diverse environments.
- Mentor and support a diverse, globally distributed team of database engineers.
- Enhance processes including incident response, postmortems, and capacity planning to ensure operational excellence.
- Collaborate with infrastructure, product, and security teams on database initiatives.
- Implement best practices for monitoring, cost optimization, and performance tuning in Postgres, CockroachDB, and future database technologies.
- Recruit and develop your team in alignment with Wave's growing needs.
