Salary and Benefits
Newly appointed Border Patrol Agents are compensated annually based on their grade level, ranging from GL-5 to GL-7, with a salary between $51,632 and $92,219. Agents enjoy a variety of federal employment benefits, including health, dental, and other insurance options, a generous leave program, and participation in the Thrift Savings Plan, similar to a traditional ROTH 401(k).
Recruitment Incentives
New hires will qualify for up to $20,000 in incentives, with the first $10,000 awarded upon successful completion of the Border Patrol Academy and the remaining $10,000 for accepting positions in prioritized locations such as Sierra Blanca, Presidio, Sanderson, Comstock, Freer or Hebbronville, TX; Lordsburg, NM; or Ajo, AZ.
Retention Incentives
Additionally, newly appointed Border Patrol Agents may qualify for up to $40,000 in retention bonuses distributed over their first four years.
Duty Locations
Important Notice: Duty assignments available at the time of offer may include the Southwest Border and other prioritized locations. USBP assigns duty locations based on operational requirements, which may not align with candidates’ preferences. Relocation may be required.
Duty locations can impact pay rates, as locality pay for federal law enforcement varies by location. Fully trained BPAs may earn up to an additional 25% of their base pay per the BPA Pay Reform Act of 2014. This is a career ladder position with potential for advancement through GL-5, GL-7, GL-9, GS-11, and GS-12 levels.
