Salary and Benefits
As a newly appointed Border Patrol Agent, your annual base salary will vary by grade level: GL-5/GL-7 ranges from $51,632 to $92,219. You'll have access to a comprehensive array of federal employment benefits, including health, dental, and other insurance plans, generous annual and sick leave programs, plus participation in the Thrift Savings Plan, which is similar to a traditional ROTH 401(k).
Recruitment Incentive
Newly appointed Border Patrol Agents may receive up to $20,000 in incentives—$10,000 payable upon successful completion of the Border Patrol Academy, with an additional $10,000 for accepting positions in prioritized locations like Sierra Blanca, Presidio, Sanderson, Comstock, Freer or Hebbronville, TX; Lordsburg, NM; or Ajo, AZ.
Retention Incentive
You may also qualify for up to $40,000 in retention incentives over your first four years.
Duty Locations
Please note that duty assignments at the time of offer may include locations along the Southwest Border, which may not align with your preferences. Relocation may be required.
Duty locations affect pay rates, with locality pay for federal law enforcement being higher in certain areas. Fully trained Border Patrol Agents may be eligible for an additional 25% of base pay under the BPA Pay Reform Act of 2014. This is a career ladder position with advancement opportunities through grade levels GL-5, GL-7, GL-9, GS-11, and GS-12.
