Compensation and Benefits
Newly appointed Border Patrol Agents can expect an annual base salary that varies by grade level, ranging from GL-5/GL-7, with salaries between $51,632 - $92,219 per year. Agents will also have the option to select from a variety of federal employment benefits, including health, dental, and other insurance plans, generous annual and sick leave policies, and participation in the Thrift Savings Plan, a retirement plan similar to a traditional ROTH 401(k).
Recruitment Incentives
Newly appointed Border Patrol Agents are eligible for up to $20,000 in recruitment incentives, with the first $10,000 awarded upon successful completion of the Border Patrol Academy and an additional $10,000 for accepting a prioritized duty location.
Retention Incentives
Agents may also qualify for up to $40,000 in retention incentives distributed over the first four years of service.
Duty Locations
Please note that duty assignments may include locations along the Southwest Border, which may not align with candidates' preferences. RELOCATION MAY BE REQUIRED. Compensation rates vary by duty location, with locality pay for federal law enforcement being higher in select areas. A fully trained BPA may be eligible for up to an additional 25% of base pay as per the BPA Pay Reform Act of 2014. This is a career ladder position with potential for advancement through grade levels GL-5, GL-7, GL-9, GS-11, and GS-12.
