Salary and Benefits
Newly appointed Border Patrol Agents will earn an annual base salary ranging from $51,632 to $92,219, depending on the grade level (GL-5/GL-7). Eligible agents can choose from a comprehensive suite of federal employment benefits, including health and dental insurance plans, a generous leave program, and participation in the Thrift Savings Plan, a retirement plan similar to a traditional ROTH 401(k).
Recruitment Incentive
Newly appointed Border Patrol Agents may qualify for up to $20,000 in recruitment incentives, with the first $10,000 awarded upon successful completion of the Border Patrol Academy and the remaining $10,000 for accepting a prioritized duty location.
Retention Incentive
Additionally, agents may be eligible for up to $40,000 in retention incentives distributed over their first four years of service.
Duty Locations
Important Notice: Duty assignments may include the Southwest Border and other prioritized locations. U.S. Border Patrol determines duty assignments based on operational requirements, which may not align with candidates' preferences. Relocation may be required. Furthermore, pay rates may vary based on duty location, with locality pay potentially increasing base salaries by up to 25% under the BPA Pay Reform Act of 2014. This is a career ladder position with opportunities for advancement through various grade levels.
