Salary and Benefits Overview
Newly appointed Border Patrol Agents' annual base salary varies by grade level, ranging from GL-5/GL-7, with an annual salary between $51,632 and $92,219. As a Border Patrol Agent, you will have access to a comprehensive suite of federal employment benefits, including health, dental, and other insurance plans, as well as a generous annual and sick leave policy. You will also be able to participate in the Thrift Savings Plan, akin to a traditional ROTH 401(k) retirement plan.
Recruitment Incentives
Newly appointed Border Patrol Agents are eligible for up to $20,000 in recruitment incentives. The first $10,000 will be awarded upon successful completion of the Border Patrol Academy, with the remaining $10,000 granted for accepting a position in prioritized locations such as Sierra Blanca, Presidio, Sanderson, Comstock, Freer, or Hebbronville, TX; Lordsburg, NM; or Ajo, AZ.
Retention Incentives
New hires may also qualify for up to $40,000 in retention incentives distributed over their first four years of service.
Duty Locations
IMPORTANT NOTICE: Duty assignments available at the time of offer may include locations along the Southwest Border, including prioritized regions. U.S. Border Patrol will determine duty assignments based on operational needs at the time of offer, which may not align with candidates' preferred locations. Relocation may be required.
Note that duty location can affect pay rates, as locality pay for federal law enforcement varies by location. A fully trained BPA may be eligible for up to an additional 25% of base pay under the BPA Pay Reform Act of 2014. This is a career ladder position with a potential for promotion through the grades of GL-5, GL-7, GL-9, GS-11, and GS-12.
