Salary and Benefits
Newly appointed Border Patrol Agents earn an annual base salary ranging from $51,632 to $92,219, depending on grade level (GL-5/GL-7). Agents enjoy a comprehensive benefits package, including health, dental, and other insurance options, generous annual and sick leave, and participation in the Thrift Savings Plan, a retirement plan similar to a traditional ROTH 401(k).
Recruitment Incentive
Newly appointed Border Patrol Agents may qualify for up to $20,000 in incentives: $10,000 upon completing the Border Patrol Academy and an additional $10,000 for accepting placement in prioritized locations such as Sierra Blanca, Presidio, Sanderson, Comstock, Freer, or Hebbronville, TX; Lordsburg, NM; or Ajo, AZ.
Retention Incentive
Agents may also be eligible for up to $40,000 in retention incentives, distributed over their first four years.
Duty Locations
Note: Duty assignments may include the Southwest Border, with relocation potentially required. The U.S. Border Patrol determines duty assignments based on operational needs, which may not align with candidates' preferences.
Duty location affects pay rates, with locality pay for federal law enforcement being higher in certain areas. A fully trained BPA may also be eligible for up to 25% additional pay under the BPA Pay Reform Act of 2014. This is a career ladder position with potential progression from GL-5 to GS-12.
