Salary and Benefits
The annual base salary for newly appointed Border Patrol Agents ranges by grade level: GL-5/GL-7, with salaries between $51,632 and $92,219 per year. As a Border Patrol Agent, you can select from a variety of federal employment benefits that include health and dental insurance, a robust annual and sick leave program, and participation in the Thrift Savings Plan, a retirement plan similar to a traditional ROTH 401(k).
Recruitment Incentive
Newly appointed Border Patrol Agents may qualify for up to $20,000 in incentives, with $10,000 awarded upon successful completion of the Border Patrol Academy, and an additional $10,000 for accepting assignments in prioritized locations, such as Sierra Blanca, Presidio, Sanderson, Comstock, Freer, or Hebbronville, TX; Lordsburg, NM; or Ajo, AZ.
Retention Incentive
Eligible newly appointed Border Patrol Agents may receive up to $40,000 in retention incentives over their first four years.
Duty Locations
Please note that duty assignments at the time of offer may include the Southwest Border, prioritizing specific locations. U.S. Border Patrol determines duty assignments based on operational needs, which may not align with candidates' preferences. Relocation may be required.
Duty locations can affect pay rates, with locality pay for federal law enforcement varying by location. A fully trained Border Patrol Agent may qualify for an additional 25% of base pay under the BPA Pay Reform Act of 2014. This position offers a clear career ladder, progressing through GL-5, GL-7, GL-9, GS-11, and GS-12 levels.
