About the job
The Executive Director of Programs and Events plays a pivotal role in providing senior leadership for the strategic planning, execution, and evaluation of alumni engagement and donor events that align with the institution’s mission and strategic priorities. Reporting directly to the AVP for Advancement Communications, Events, and Donor Relations, this position is responsible for overseeing impactful programs and convenings designed to inform and inspire diverse audiences by showcasing faculty, students, alumni, volunteers, and key leaders. The Executive Director is committed to ensuring that all initiatives reflect Harvard's academic excellence, inclusivity, and institutional values.
Key Responsibilities:
Strategic Leadership & Institutional Alignment
Formulate and implement a comprehensive strategy for alumni and donor engagement programs that are closely aligned with institutional objectives.
Act as a strategic advisor to senior leadership regarding programmatic and event-based initiatives.
Ensure that all programs and events enhance alumni engagement, support volunteer education, and facilitate the recognition of top donors.
Program Development and Execution
Lead the development of engaging programs and collaborate on content delivery for events in partnership with the Harvard Alumni Association, Faculty of Arts and Sciences, and the University Development Office.
Work closely with faculty, academic departments, and leadership to design and deliver exceptional programming.
Establish assessment frameworks to evaluate program effectiveness, engagement outcomes, and overall institutional impact.
Events Logistics
Oversee the planning and execution of significant institutional events, including reunions, committee gatherings, academic convenings, and donor-focused programs.
Ensure all events adhere to institutional standards for accessibility, inclusivity, financial management, and brand representation.
Lead post-event evaluations and implement continuous improvement strategies.
Manage program and event budgets responsibly to ensure the effective use of institutional resources.
Supervise contracts, vendor relationships, space utilization, and compliance with university policies.
Leadership Travel
Facilitate the creation of annual plans for deploying academic deans and key faculty and administrative leaders in fundraising activities, including development travel for individual prospect visits and participation in regional events.
