About the job
Thorlabs is dedicated to advancing the frontiers of science through the innovative components, instruments, and systems we design and manufacture. We believe in the transformative power of science and innovation to enhance the world around us, and we are committed to pushing the boundaries of photonics technology to positively impact our customers, employees, and communities. Through educational outreach and sustainable business practices, we continuously invest in a brighter future. We recognize the unique contributions of each of our employees and strive to find exceptional individuals who will thrive in our dynamic and fast-paced culture.
We are currently seeking an experienced Firmware Engineer II to join our vibrant team at the Colorado Center for Innovation (CCI).
At CCI, we don't merely create tools; we are building the foundation for the photonics revolution. As a Firmware Engineer II, you will design and implement the sophisticated firmware that powers our advanced hardware. You will be responsible for developing real-time firmware and algorithms that drive quantum photon sources, precision lasers, and ultra-low-noise instrumentation. This role is perfect for an engineer who excels at the intersection of high-speed digital logic, sensitive analog physics, and manufacturing.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop real-time firmware to control and synchronize complex optical, mechanical, and electrical subsystems in high-precision environments.
- Translate optical and electro-mechanical requirements into robust firmware architectures, transitioning prototype code into stable, production-ready solutions.
- Lead proof-of-concept testing and feasibility evaluations to inform future technology decisions, including microcontroller and FPGA-based designs.
- Produce and maintain comprehensive technical documentation, including firmware operations, SDK specifications, and revision tracking.
- Design and execute rigorous test protocols, qualification procedures, and custom fixtures to validate system performance.
- Manage project milestones and deliverables while adhering to ultra-low-noise performance standards.
- Conduct root-cause analysis on complex electronics and firmware issues, providing solutions for both R&D and production.
- Develop manufacturing test fixtures and serve as the primary technical escalation point to support production quality and yield.
The company reserves the right to modify or assign additional duties as necessary.
