Our Safer Use Programs have been implemented as a response to the opioid overdose crisis, providing a safer environment for substance consumption alongside addiction and mental health support within housing and shelter settings. As a Harm Reduction Worker, you will play a critical role in assisting individuals who use substances by promoting safer usage and minimizing health risks.
** This is a permanent, part-time position (22 hours per week) that includes personal days, vacation pay, group health benefits, and a defined contribution pension plan. The schedule is Saturday and Sunday, from 4:00 PM to 4:00 AM. A successful Police Records Check (Vulnerable Sector) is required prior to employment. **
Key Responsibilities:
Welcome and engage participants, orienting them to the service and the space while completing brief intake and reviewing service user agreements.
Maintain a clean, organized, and respectful environment within the Safer Use Program (SUP).
Establish and uphold professional boundaries while building supportive relationships with program participants.
Supervise substance consumption and intervene appropriately during drug poisoning crises.
Distribute harm reduction supplies and resources aimed at improving the health and quality of life for all participants.
Provide education and support to participants regarding safer drug use practices, safe disposal, and overdose prevention, including training in Naloxone use.
Ensure the safe disposal and handling of used drug equipment and supplies.
Collaborate with the team by attending meetings, training sessions, and regular supervision meetings.
Collect statistics, perform data entry, and write brief reports.
Document all relevant information in accordance with the Urgent Public Health Needs Site (UPHNS) agreement with Health Canada and participate in ongoing evaluations.
Track and record supplies distributed and collected.
Assist in stocking and organizing harm reduction inventory and other program supplies.
Adhere to established rules, procedures, and standards, referring issues or problems to the supervisor.
