About the job
As an FX Artist at Rodeo FX, you will design and create intricate visual simulations including fire, smoke, fluids, destruction, and abstract effects, all while adhering to the artistic and technical standards set by our team. Embedded within the 3D pipeline, you will closely collaborate with FX supervision, CG, and other departments to deliver photorealistic, dynamic, and technically robust shots. Your creativity, attention to detail, and proficiency with procedural tools will effectively translate the visual intentions of each project.
Key Responsibilities:
Mastery of Craft
- Create complex simulations (smoke, fire, explosions, liquids, destruction, magical or abstract effects) in line with artistic and technical directives.
- Utilize Houdini proficiently (Pyro, Flip, RBD, Vellum, SOPs) to produce optimized and adaptable effects.
- Maintain a high level of autonomy in managing assigned FX tasks, from the initial setup to the final render.
- Ensure rigorous quality control of files, caches, and workfiles prior to submission.
Creative Quality
- Propose simple and effective artistic solutions that align with the project vision.
- Actively participate in dailies and integrate feedback constructively.
- Tailor effects to meet narrative requirements, visual style, and pacing of scenes.
- Enhance shots by adding creative value to simulations.
Technical Quality
- Ensure cache optimization, setup stability, and adherence to internal technical conventions.
- Quickly identify technical issues and provide functional solutions.
- Collaborate with the Pipeline team to integrate or test new tools as project needs arise.
- Check the compatibility of effects with other departments (layout, lighting, comp).
Communication
- Provide realistic estimates and communicate effectively in case of challenges or potential delays, working with production to adjust priorities as needed.
- Maintain respectful and fluid communication with production, leads, and artists from other disciplines.
- Clearly articulate issues, deadlines, needs, or technical limitations.
- Actively engage in turnovers, briefings, or progress follow-ups with the project team.

- Stay updated on the latest practices, techniques, and references in visual effects.
- Share knowledge, tools, or techniques with colleagues.
