ABOUT THE POSITION
The ACLU's National Chapter of North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wyoming is on the lookout for a passionate and dedicated individual to fill the full-time role of Legal Director based in either Sioux Falls, SD or Fargo, ND. This is a hybrid position requiring in-office attendance for two (2) days each week, or a total of eight (8) days per month.
We are elevating our organization by enhancing our legal capabilities, bolstering legislative influence, diversifying our communication strategies, and launching impactful issue campaigns. To achieve these goals, the ACLU of South Dakota, North Dakota, and Wyoming has implemented a campaign-oriented approach, focusing on specific integrated advocacy initiatives that aim to achieve measurable outcomes, expand civil liberties, and strengthen the ACLU's long-term power and the broader civil liberties movement.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
As the Legal Director, reporting directly to the Executive Director of the Dakotas/Wyoming Chapter, you will lead and expand the ACLU's legal programs across South Dakota, North Dakota, and Wyoming. Your responsibilities will include developing and litigating high-impact cases while managing the legal department. Under the guidance of the Executive Director, you will formulate and implement legal strategies that further the ACLU of SD/ND/WY mission. You will also oversee the daily operations of the legal staff and collaborating attorneys. As a vital member of the senior leadership team, you will provide strategic direction for both litigation and non-litigation advocacy in priority areas such as criminal justice, immigrant rights, Indigenous justice, LGBTQ and Two-Spirit equality, reproductive rights, voting rights, and First Amendment rights.

We are in search of a proactive and strategic Legal Director who will manage all facets of litigation and serve as a key senior leader within our chapter. The ideal candidate will exhibit a strong commitment to legal advocacy, demonstrating the ability to inspire and lead a team towards achieving the ACLU's mission.
