Position Summary
As a vital component of the Patient Experience Portfolio, our Learning Centres are dedicated to enhancing patient experiences throughout the care continuum by providing high-quality health information, digital health literacy tools, and caregiver support. As a Library Technician, you will work closely with the Librarian to manage administrative, operational, and technical tasks within the Learning Centres. Your responsibilities will include overseeing daily operations, delivering exceptional customer service, processing resources, cataloguing, and performing customized health information searches. This entry-level position is perfect for individuals passionate about health librarianship. Please note that this role is fully on-site at both Toronto General and Toronto Western Hospitals.
Duties
- Deliver outstanding customer service at the front desk by welcoming library visitors, assessing their information needs, and providing immediate assistance. This includes offering reliable health information, aiding with digital devices, and connecting patients with relevant services at UHN or within the community.
- Conduct information consults and provide consumer health reference services to patients, families, the public, and healthcare professionals to facilitate patient education and health literacy.
- Assist patients and families in navigating hospital spaces and systems; refer them to other departments or community agencies as required.
- Support collection development and the acquisition process.
- Create a safe, non-judgmental environment for all patrons, prioritizing patient and staff safety.
- Exhibit strong interpersonal and communication skills, demonstrating compassion and respect for colleagues, patients, family members, and caregivers.
- Ensure that library technology is functioning properly and liaise with digital support when necessary.
- Perform cataloguing duties under the supervision of the Librarian and undertake additional tasks as assigned.
