About the job
About Periodic Labs
At Periodic Labs, we are pioneering the integration of AI with physical sciences to develop advanced models that drive groundbreaking scientific discoveries. Our lab is well-funded and rapidly expanding, where every team member takes ownership in identifying and solving complex problems without the constraints of bureaucracy. We are committed to continuously learning and adapting new tools and scientific approaches to achieve our mission.
About the Role
We invite you to join our elite team of scientists and engineers as we redefine the frontiers of materials research in a cutting-edge facility. As a Mechanical Engineer at Periodic Labs, you will play a pivotal role in designing and constructing our automated laboratory, aimed at accelerating materials discovery. Collaborating closely with scientists, you will transform conceptual ideas and specifications into actionable, build-ready designs. You will also work with integrators and contract manufacturers to oversee the successful installation and launch of systems, ensuring the mechanical integrity of new tools and fixtures while prioritizing quality, safety, and efficient execution.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of materials scientists and engineers to transform user and system requirements into precise mechanical specifications and interface definitions.
- Lead Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) interactions with vendors, reviewing engineering drawings, GD&T, tolerance stacks, and material specifications.
- Establish factory and site acceptance test criteria, oversee testing, and ensure prompt resolution of any issues.
- Assist with onsite assembly, alignment, and anchoring, coordinating with general contractors and facility teams.
- Design and manage the development of fixtures, guarding, enclosures, and mounting solutions, both custom and off-the-shelf.
- Maintain comprehensive bills of materials, revision control, and as-built documentation.
- Incorporate machine safety and ergonomic principles into designs, collaborating on interlocks and guarding solutions.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in mechanical design and vendor-facing manufacturing processes, including machining, sheet metal work, and plastics.
- Proficient in CAD software (SolidWorks & PDM), GD&T, tolerance analysis, and drawing management.
- Experience designing fixtures, frames, and enclosures for mechatronic and automation systems.
- Comfortable with onsite installations and system bring-up in fast-paced environments.
