The Oncology Infusion Medical Assistant embodies the mission, vision, and values of Northwestern Medicine. This position is a vital part of the healthcare team, primarily tasked with providing essential support to physicians, nurses, and other licensed medical staff. The Medical Assistant facilitates efficient patient flow, aids in various patient care activities, and executes related administrative functions. Responsibilities include ensuring smooth patient flow through the clinic, maintaining clean and safe patient care areas, and fostering patient satisfaction through professional and friendly interactions while safeguarding patient confidentiality.
Key Responsibilities:
- Facilitates efficient patient flow by escorting patients to examination rooms, confirming identities with two identifiers, and preparing them for examinations. This includes accurately obtaining vital signs as per organizational standards, documenting reasons for visits, and updating allergies, smoking history, and pharmacy information. Any significant changes in vital signs or acute symptoms should be promptly reported to the provider and registered nurse. The Medical Assistant also anticipates the needs for equipment or supplies and ensures exam rooms are clean and prepared for the next patient.
- Assists practitioners with medical and surgical procedures following established protocols, which may include Electrocardiograms (ECG), venipuncture, immunizations, setting up procedure trays, and specimen collection or Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) waived testing as directed by the provider.
- Ensures high-quality care by preparing and stocking exam rooms according to established disinfecting and sterilizing protocols. Actively participates in environmental safety rounds, maintains vaccine and medication inventory, monitors equipment, assists in ordering supplies, and properly disposes of expired items while adhering to office opening and closing procedures.
- Functions as a core member of the patient care team, promoting patient satisfaction through professional interactions. This includes accepting delegated responsibilities positively, assisting colleagues, participating in staff meetings, and communicating effectively with patients and the care team both in person and over the phone.
- Performs specialty-specific delegated procedures safely and effectively.
