The Organ Procurement Specialist embodies the mission, vision, and values of Northwestern Medicine (NM). This role is pivotal in adhering to the organization’s Code of Ethics, Corporate Compliance Program, and all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines, as well as regulatory and accreditation standards.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide continuous on-call coverage for the transplant center regarding organ procurement.
- Receive and accurately document potential donor organ information from the Organ Procurement Service (OPS).
- Communicate essential information to attending physicians.
- Engage the Transplant Nurse Coordinator (TNC) on-call to reach out to potential recipients.
- Coordinate logistics with the OR Control desk, surgeons, fellows, and other staff for recipient operations.
- Mobilize and lead the procurement team efficiently.
- Ensure appropriate transportation arrangements for the procurement team.
- Oversee all facets of the donor operation, including the perfusion of harvested organs.
- Facilitate communication among team members to ensure a seamless recipient operation.
- Verify the accuracy of bills from organ procurement organizations (OPOs), the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS), and medical transplant teams.
- Coordinate the OPS schedules at Chicago Medical Hospital (CMH) for 24/7 coverage.
- Participate in weekly transplant meetings for various organ transplant services at least twice a month.
- Collaborate with all organ TNCs to maintain comprehensive knowledge of high-priority recipients on the waiting list.
- Ensure that necessary procurement supplies are consistently available.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Coordinate educational services with clinical staff on organ procurement policies and procedures.
- Assist in the development and review of policies related to compliance with OPTN and UNOS regulations.
