The Patient Care Technician plays a vital role in assisting and supporting Professional Registered Nurses in various direct and indirect patient care activities. As a key member of the unit staff, you will work under the direction and supervision of the Professional Registered Nurse.
Key Responsibilities:
- Direct Patient Care Activities:
- Assist with patient admissions, transfers, and discharges.
- Measure and document vital signs such as temperature, pulse, respiration, weight, height, and blood pressure for adult and newborn patients.
- Monitor and record patient intake and output, including drainage outputs.
- Set up and monitor cardiac monitors and oximetry.
- Conduct EKG tests.
- Follow infant security protocols, ensuring accurate band placement.
- Perform newborn hearing screenings.
- Conduct capillary blood glucose tests for patients.
- Carry out phlebotomy tasks.
- Apply fetal monitoring equipment to pregnant patients.
- Discontinue heplocks and Foley catheters; administer enemas as needed.
- Collect various specimens (urine, stool, blood, sputum) from patients.
- Respond promptly to patient call lights, prioritizing emergencies.
- Provide nourishment and prepare patients for meals, assisting them as necessary.
- Deliver morning care, bed baths, and evening care in accordance with established Nursing Care Procedures.
- Ensure proper newborn care, including bathing, dressing, footprint collection, and assisting with feeding.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of patient rooms.
- Assist in patient ambulation and educate on mobility aids such as walkers, canes, and crutches.
- Support pre-and post-operative care, positioning patients as required and applying safety equipment.
- Ensure patient comfort and safety through appropriate measures.
- Set up oxygen and suction equipment for patients.
- Apply dressings to patients with Stage I and Stage II skin breakdown.
- Prepare patient rooms for assessments and assist in diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
