About the job
The New York City Department of Homeless Services (DHS) stands as the largest organization in the United States devoted to tackling the issue of homelessness. Collaborating with various City agencies and nonprofit organizations, DHS strives to prevent homelessness proactively, minimize street homelessness, offer temporary shelter, and connect individuals and families to secure housing, all while emphasizing accountability, empathy, and equity.
DHS is dedicated to ongoing enhancement and employs innovative strategies to provide high-quality services that facilitate a swift transition from shelter to self-sufficiency. The agency oversees hundreds of facilities and operates with a substantial budget, amounting to several billion dollars, to cater to the diverse needs of New Yorkers facing homelessness.
The Department of Homeless Services leads a 24/7/365 Street Homelessness Solutions - Joint Command Center (JCC), which conducts rapid interagency outreach deployments. The JCC's responsibilities include canvassing and engaging with homeless individuals on the streets and subway systems. This initiative integrates existing homeless response and prevention programs with new strategies designed to better identify, engage, and transition homeless New Yorkers to appropriate services and ultimately towards permanent housing.
DHS is currently seeking a Community Assistant to serve as a Peer Coordinator who will:
- Provide information regarding available DHS and community services to individuals experiencing homelessness across above-ground locations throughout the five boroughs and within the NYC subway system, including Penn Station. Respond to inquiries and relay information.
- Observe and gather information from individuals who may be homeless. Submit referrals for engagement to Field Associates and Crisis Coordinators.
- Support supervisory staff by following up on incomplete or pending referrals.
- Escort clients to and from community events.
- Offer clerical support services such as filing, record keeping, and documentation. Update client records and assist in preparing standard reports.
- Collaborate with community groups and local businesses by sharing information and providing feedback regarding DHS Outreach and shelter services.
