The Pharmacy Technician III exemplifies the mission, vision, and values of Northwestern Medicine (NM). Under the supervision of a registered pharmacist, the Pharmacy Technician III performs all technical duties related to the daily operations within the dispensing areas. Responsibilities include managing prescription-related, unit dose-related, and sterile product-related functions, as well as executing documented manufacturing procedures.
Scheduling:
This position requires full-time commitment, with expected weekly hours of 40. Shift timings may vary based on departmental and patient care needs, and currently, the role is anticipated to involve rotating shifts, including both AM and PM schedules.
- Weekend Commitment: Every other weekend (Saturday and Sunday)
- Holiday Commitment: One winter and one summer holiday
The primary work location for this role is the Feinberg 9th floor pharmacy. However, the position may involve rotations to other pharmacies within Northwestern Memorial Hospital based on operational requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
- Prepare medication orders for inpatient care.
- Dispense prescriptions for outpatients.
- Collect orders and deliver medications to nursing units.
- Schedule intravenous admixture solutions in accordance with patient medical records and report any discrepancies to a pharmacist.
- Follow hospital policy when answering phone calls, ensuring the appropriate handling of inquiries by either a pharmacist or a technician.
- Enter new drug orders and renewal/refill information into the computerized patient medication profile.
- Utilize computer systems for dispensing and inquiry functions.
- Compare patient medication bins with pharmacy and nursing records; return unnecessary or outdated medications to the pharmacy and address discrepancies.
- Receive, prepare, and distribute floor stock requisitions and requests from other clinical locations.
- Compound dosage forms necessary for patient dispensing.
- Assist in maintaining adequate inventory levels in dispensing areas.
- Package extemporaneous and STAT single doses of medications under pharmacist supervision.
- Prepare and maintain emergency medication systems.
- Prepare sterile products for patient administration, selecting appropriate diluents and vehicles while assessing stability.
- Prepare cytotoxic agents for administration, adhering to hospital and departmental aseptic and protective procedures.
- Plan and execute daily tasks to uphold department standards.
