The Division of Transportation Planning & Management (TPM) is on the lookout for a seasoned transportation professional to take on the role of Senior Director for Bus Priority within the Transit Development unit. This pivotal position is responsible for the strategic oversight and execution of the City’s bus priority initiatives, directly impacting mobility, equity, and the overall quality of life for millions of residents in New York City.
As the Senior Director, reporting to the Assistant Commissioner for Transit Development, you will lead and manage a dedicated team focused on the planning, design, implementation, and performance assessment of bus lanes, busways, and transit-friendly street enhancements designed to improve bus speed, reliability, and safety for countless riders annually. Your responsibilities will include:
1) Mentoring and managing a team of around a dozen planners, engineers, analysts, and project managers, providing them with leadership, guidance, and strategic direction;
2) Overseeing the bus priority program's budget and assisting the Assistant Commissioner with grant applications, financial planning, and budget forecasting;
3) Spearheading the development of innovative designs and standards for accessible bus stops;
4) Leading complex corridor redesigns to align with the mandates of the Streets Plan bus lane objectives;
5) Advocating for design innovation and pilot testing new approaches to street geometry and materials;
6) Directing data-driven project development, sequencing of implementation, and post-implementation evaluations;
7) Collaborating closely with the MTA, other agencies, and internal DOT divisions to ensure seamless project delivery;
8) Cultivating stakeholder relationships and representing the agency in high-profile meetings with elected officials, community boards, advocacy groups, and the public.
The Senior Director will play a vital role in advancing the priorities of the Mayor and the agency, ensuring that transformative bus priority projects are executed with technical excellence, operational efficiency, and strong community involvement.
The Division of Transportation Planning & Management (TPM) is committed to ensuring the safe, efficient, and environmentally friendly movement of people and goods across the City’s streets. Within TPM, the Transit Development (TD) unit establishes transit-supportive street infrastructure and policies aimed at enhancing mobility for all New Yorkers. TD actively manages the Better Buses initiative alongside a diverse portfolio of location-specific projects designed to enhance the quality and safety of bus operations while improving pedestrian access to transit. TD also serves as a key resource on transit-related matters and acts as a primary liaison with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA).
