About the job
The Center for Health Equity & Community Wellness (CHECW) is dedicated to eradicating inequities that lead to premature mortality. With a robust foundation in historical context and structural analysis, CHECW strives to raise awareness of socially unjust policies while advocating for reparative measures for the most affected communities in New York City. Collaborating with community-based, faith-based, and health organizations, CHECW addresses disparities across community and healthcare systems. Our initiatives focus on the social determinants of health, considering both environmental and commercial factors, to enhance the health and well-being of New Yorkers. CHECW includes the Bureau of Bronx Neighborhood Health, Bureau of Brooklyn Neighborhood Health, Bureau of Harlem Neighborhood Health, Bureau of Chronic Disease Prevention, Bureau of Health Equity Capacity Building, Bureau of Equitable Health Systems, and Bureau of Finance, Administration, and Services. Additionally, the division’s Deputy Commissioner acts as the Agency's Chief Equity Officer, overseeing the Race to Justice initiative, aimed at empowering our staff to effectively address racial health disparities and improve health outcomes for all New Yorkers. The Bureau of Bronx Neighborhood Health, formerly known as the Bronx Neighborhood Health Action Centers, will continue to provide guidance and leadership in programming and planning for the Tremont Neighborhood Health Action Center, with additional programming at the Morrisania District Health Office. This bureau is committed to supporting initiatives, planning, and research opportunities targeting racial inequities contributing to premature mortality in South Bronx neighborhoods.
