GiveDirectly (GD) is revolutionizing the landscape of international philanthropy by delivering direct cash grants to the world’s most impoverished communities. The Brookings Institution estimates that a staggering $70 billion in cash transfers is necessary to close the global poverty gap, yet the aid sector currently allocates $135 billion annually, much of which is spent on interventions lacking robust evidence. GD is committed to transforming this dynamic, seeking to establish cash transfers as the gold standard for foreign aid—similar to how index funds have reshaped the financial sector—ultimately accelerating the eradication of extreme poverty.
Since its inception in 2011, GD has successfully raised over $1 billion and has provided cash support to more than 1.5 million individuals across 15 countries. Our pioneering approach has fostered large-scale research demonstrating significant positive impacts for recipients. This innovative work has garnered recognition from leading entities, including being named one of the most innovative non-profits by Fast Company, and has been featured in prominent publications such as The New York Times Magazine, This American Life, Foreign Affairs, and The Economist.
