GiveDirectly (GD) is redefining the landscape of international philanthropy by delivering cash grants directly to the world's most impoverished communities. According to the Brookings Institution, an estimated $70 billion in cash transfers could close the poverty gap, while the aid sector currently expends $135 billion annually, much of which goes towards ineffective interventions. GD is committed to revolutionizing this approach, establishing cash transfers as the benchmark for foreign aid, akin to how index funds benchmark the financial industry, ultimately aiming to eradicate extreme poverty.
Since our inception in 2011, we have raised over $1 billion and provided direct cash support to more than 1.5 million individuals across 15 different countries. Our commitment to large-scale experimental research has demonstrated the significant positive impact of our programs on recipients. Fast Company has recognized GD as one of the most innovative non-profit organizations, and our pioneering role in the cash transfer movement has been highlighted in prestigious publications such as the New York Times Magazine, This American Life, Foreign Affairs, and The Economist.
