As a Student Nurse at the University of Maryland Medical System, you will work under the direct supervision of a registered nurse, actively participating in the nursing process to provide exceptional care to patients and their families. Your responsibilities will encompass a variety of direct care activities essential for daily operations on the assigned unit. This role requires access to medication storage areas and the ability to transport medications as needed.
Key Responsibilities

- Support the registered nurse in assessing patients by monitoring specified parameters in line with established Nursing Standards of Practice.
- Assist the registered nurse in planning nursing care by providing valuable insights based on observations of previous treatments.
- Implement nursing care activities as delegated by the registered nurse, including:
- Assisting with nasogastric irrigations and feeding procedures.
- Conducting urinary catheterization and related care.
- Performing unit-specific procedures such as dressing changes and managing intake and output calculations.
- Delivering direct patient care, ensuring comfort through personal hygiene, positioning, and assistance with mobility.
- Facilitating patient admissions and discharges, including the preparation of necessary equipment.
- Providing care for medical devices such as braces and compression garments.
- Assist in evaluating nursing care by reporting patient responses, including pain management and vital signs.
- Exhibit knowledge and skills suitable for the age group of patients served, demonstrating an understanding of growth and development principles across the lifespan.
- Accurately document vital signs and other relevant patient information in adherence to Nursing Documentation standards.
