Position Overview
Application Deadline: The deadline for submissions for the Office of the General Counsel Externship – Summer 2026 is Friday, April 3rd, at 11:59 PM ET.
Program Duration:
Externs will participate from May 15th, 2026, to September 15, 2026 (dates may be flexible based on academic requirements).
Legal externs will have the opportunity to gain practical experience as integral members of the Office of the General Counsel (OGC). The OGC is tasked with delivering high-quality, cost-effective legal services to NPR's various clients. Externs will engage in a variety of meaningful assignments, including contract review and drafting, legal research, training, and additional projects that reflect the responsibilities of in-house attorneys at NPR. The legal team at NPR provides support across multiple divisions on issues including commercial law, nonprofit tax, governance, technology (like software licensing and artificial intelligence), intellectual property (including music rights and copyright), regulatory matters, and employment and labor law.
Extern Responsibilities
Legal externs will be expected to contribute across all practice areas. They will conduct legal research and draft legal memoranda, contracts, and other documents. Additionally, externs will have the chance to participate in client meetings, training sessions, legislative and regulatory meetings, and various projects outside the traditional legal environment.
