About the Role
As a Technical Program Manager at OpenAI, your focus will be on the technical intricacies of program leadership. You will manage the entire lifecycle of complex, highly technical research initiatives, translating abstract research objectives into tangible technical results. Your role will involve orchestrating collaboration across various teams, including Research, Infrastructure, Data/Compliance, Forward Deployed Engineering, Customer Success, and external partners, ensuring adherence to milestones, governance, and disciplined delivery while prioritizing integrity, security, and safety.
In this role, you will:
Develop and maintain the technical roadmap in partnership with the tech lead.
Transform uncertainty into actionable specifications, including task definitions, evaluation methodologies, baselines, acceptance criteria, and decision gates.
Oversee the critical path across the tech stack: ensuring data, infrastructure, training loops, and evaluations are ready.
Ensure technical alignment among partners through shared roadmaps, success metrics, and escalation pathways for constraint resolution.
Collaborate with research and engineering teams to establish technical requirements, integration plans, and evaluation strategies.
Implement operational processes for training runs, including developing runbooks, dashboards, triage procedures, postmortems, and automation to eliminate recurring failures.
Align partner objectives with OpenAI's strategic priorities.
Provide clear visibility to executives regarding partnership health, risks, and opportunities.
Facilitate decision-making without formal authority through structured narratives, clear options, and transparent trade-offs.
Create high-quality documentation, including program documents, executive summaries, runbooks, dashboards, and updates for partners.
