About the job
Invest in Your Future as a Veterinary Professional!
At Dwight Veterinary Clinic, we recognize the importance of practical experience in shaping the next generation of veterinary doctors. Our DVM Student Externship/Preceptorship Program offers an exceptional opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a modern and well-run practice, enhancing your educational journey as you prepare to deliver top-notch care post-graduation.
Program Highlights:
Our externships are adaptable and typically range from two to eight weeks, aligning with your academic requirements. Most students complete externships lasting between two to three weeks. Your schedule will include a mix of days, evenings, and weekends, and all externs will receive a weekly stipend of $250.
During your externship, you will work directly under the supervision of our experienced veterinary team, allowing you to practice essential problem-solving, technical, and communication skills. Externs actively participate in all facets of patient care, gaining invaluable experience that will aid in your transition from student to practitioner.
Your Responsibilities:
As an extern, you will engage with the typical caseload of a small animal practice. Under the guidance of a mentor veterinarian, you will gather patient histories, perform physical examinations, develop diagnostic and therapeutic plans, assist in surgeries, manage medical cases, and enhance your client communication and technical skills while maintaining accurate medical records.
Candidate Profile:
We seek enthusiastic and dedicated veterinary students who are committed to participating in our patient care initiatives while upholding the professional and ethical standards of our practice. Prior to beginning your externship, we recommend reviewing the Veterinary Practice Act to understand the scope of duties permissible under veterinary supervision.
As a representative of our clinic, professionalism in appearance and behavior is essential, and you are expected to adhere to the guidelines outlined in our employee handbook.
