The Office of Building Water System Oversight (BWSO) within the Bureau of Environmental Sciences and Engineering (ESE) is dedicated to safeguarding public health by ensuring compliance with regulations aimed at enhancing the operational safety of engineered water systems, including cooling towers, water tanks, evaporative condensers, internal plumbing, and wastewater management systems. This critical role involves conducting thorough inspections and assessments across the five boroughs of New York City.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct field inspections under supervision, traveling to various building types within the five boroughs, focusing on water supply and distribution systems.
- Review water management plans, equipment operation records, and perform physical inspections of treatment equipment, along with water sample collection and quality analysis.
- Generate and submit detailed field inspection reports adhering to Bureau protocols and conduct follow-up inspections as necessary.
- Provide customer service to building owners, facility maintenance staff, and other stakeholders.
- Offer recommendations to enhance regulatory compliance and address environmental health hazards in line with NYC and NYS regulations.
- Review inspection findings for use in administrative hearings related to violations.
- Respond promptly to alerts from the Department's Legionnaires' disease surveillance system and implement response protocols.
- Prepare water samples for analysis, ensuring all necessary documentation is completed.
- Conduct surveys to identify risks for Legionella exposure and review technical schematics for water systems.
