Position Overview
NPR’s esteemed Washington Desk delivers sophisticated yet accessible coverage regarding the White House, Congress, the Supreme Court, the Justice Department, national security, and electoral politics. Central to our mission are original reporting, breaking news, and innovative storytelling that provide clarity and context, excelling in explanatory journalism. Our Washington Desk is known for its strong work ethic, aspiring to great storytelling both on-air and online, with our coverage featured on Morning Edition, All Things Considered, NPR.org, the NPR Politics Podcast, and Up First.
We are seeking a full-time correspondent to cover the White House. Candidates should possess extensive experience in White House reporting or substantial Congressional or national political coverage. The ideal reporter will bring sourcing, enthusiasm, and sophistication to the beat, along with the ability to think creatively about stories and the most effective ways to convey them. Attention to detail, adaptability in a fast-paced news environment, and a commitment to quality are essential. We require a reporter with five or more years of experience, particularly valuing those with engaging live broadcast expertise.
The correspondent will be responsible for meeting daily news deadlines, developing longer-form feature stories, and demonstrating the sourcing and initiative to break news. Additionally, the reporter should maintain a comprehensive story list and possess the capability to report and produce content rapidly and accurately across all NPR platforms. Engaging and conversational live broadcast interviews are crucial skills for this role.
This position is based in Washington, D.C., and may involve occasional travel, weekend work, and a variable schedule.
