The Office of School Health (OSH), a collaborative initiative between the New York City Department of Education and the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, is dedicated to enhancing the health of over 1.3 million students across approximately 1,800 public and non-public schools in New York City. Our comprehensive services encompass case management for chronic health issues, preventive screenings, urgent care, medication administration, counseling, reproductive health services, health education, referrals, and ensuring effective ongoing treatment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee assignments and schedules for nursing and paraprofessional staff.
- Leverage the Automated Student Health Record (ASHR) to produce reports.
- Facilitate in-service training sessions and orchestrate staff development activities.
- Engage in the recruitment and orientation of new personnel.
- Analyze data from OSH management reports, including walk-ins, case management, and special projects.
- Participate in disciplinary actions as necessary.
- Conduct site visits to schools for clinical supervision of nursing staff and assistants.
- Collaborate with the OSH team (including Supervising Medical Doctors, Vision team, Mental Health team, etc.) to strategize initiatives in assigned areas.
- Monitor medical supply and equipment inventory.
- Join emergency response teams for potential bioterrorism threats and other health emergencies as directed by the Health Commissioner.
The Supervising Public Health Nurse Level 3 role is crucial in ensuring the health and safety of our students and enhancing the efficiency of health services to foster a healthier school environment.
