This role requires a collaborative spirit, as the Legal Counsel will foster outreach and alignment with allies focused on legislative and policy matters, both at the federal and state levels. The Legal Counsel will also be an integral part of the government affairs team responsible for legislative reviews and educational programs.Furthermore, the Senior Counsel will closely collaborate with the Center for Free Speech and the Global Censorship Group to develop legislative strategies that align with their objectives. This position will emphasize providing legal guidance on issues related to free speech, government censorship—both domestic and international—private sector censorship (including online platforms and professional associations), state-private censorship collusion, artificial intelligence implications, and strategies to safeguard speech and expression across technology, online platforms, financial services, and the broader business and professional landscape.Key ResponsibilitiesAdvocate for and coordinate support for ADF’s positions on governmental policies and legislation, particularly focusing on free speech, government censorship (domestic and foreign), and private-sector censorship across various platforms.

Reporting directly to the Senior Counsel, Director of the Center for Free Speech, you will play a pivotal role in guiding the Free Speech team with minimal oversight from senior attorneys.Key ResponsibilitiesLead complex litigation efforts in defense of free speech rights.Formulate strategic arguments and prepare compelling testimonies for case presentations.Draft high-quality legal documents, including briefs, motions, and memoranda, with a focus on precision and clarity.Conduct comprehensive research to support free speech initiatives and manage fact and expert discovery, including depositions.Advocate for ADF’s free speech initiatives in public forums.
