Required Experience and Certifications:A valid Tennessee teaching license with at least one of the following endorsements:Special Education Interventionist K-8 (144)Special Education Interventionist 6-12 (145)Special Education Comprehensive K-12 (461 or 460)CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute) certification is required or a willingness to complete training upon hire. A Bachelor’s degree is mandatory. Must pass a Criminal Background Check. Desired Qualities:A strong commitment to working with students from educationally under-resourced communities is highly preferred. Proven experience and success in teaching students from similar backgrounds is highly preferred. A minimum of two years of teaching experience is preferred. A passion for data-driven instruction is essential.

Responsibilities of the Special Education Teacher:

The Middle School Special Education Teacher will oversee a designated caseload, providing essential support to students with special needs. The goal is to empower these students to achieve their intellectual, emotional, physical, and social potential. This role also involves guiding Lead Teachers to ensure adherence to Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and effectively meeting the diverse needs of special needs students.

Special Education Coordination:

  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and district regulations related to Special Education and English Language Learners (ELL).

  • Establish procedures for enrolling and discharging students from services.

  • Collaborate with school staff to design and implement the Response to Intervention (RTI) process for both behavior and academic challenges.

  • Administer necessary assessments to gauge student progress.

  • Oversee the creation, revision, and execution of student IEPs and 504 Plans.

  • Lead meetings for IEPs and 504 Plans.

Special Education Leadership:

  • Engage with general education teachers to review IEPs, provide strategies, and offer support as required.

  • Modify general education teachers’ lesson plans, assessments, and homework to align with individual student objectives.

  • Facilitate professional development for teachers, focusing on effective strategies for Special Education and Multilingual Learner students.

Curriculum Development and Instruction:

  • Develop and implement tailored instructional strategies and materials that accommodate the varied learning styles and needs of students.

  • Utilize student progress monitoring tools to assess and adapt strategies, programming, and IEPs accordingly.

  • Leverage data to guide instructional approaches.

  • Provide students with daily feedback on their academic and character development, while planning for individual learning needs.

  • Exhibit strong pedagogical practices.

  • Collaborate with your school team and other KIPP Nashville staff.

  • Contribute to fostering a school-wide culture that meets the needs of students, teachers, and families.

  • Attend all staff meetings and maintain open communication with colleagues.

  • Build positive relationships with students to create a supportive learning environment.

  • Promote and maintain the school’s values and student management policies.

Family Engagement:

  • Establish and maintain effective communication with parents regarding student progress.
