About the job

Join our team at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) as an experienced Nonlinear Computational Analysis Engineer. This role is perfect for those with a robust background in computational mechanics, material failure analysis, high-rate dynamics, and multi-physics analysis. You will play a key role in supporting the design and assessment of intricate mechanical systems and structures, leveraging our advanced, parallel, high-performance nonlinear hydrostructural analysis codes.

Your contributions will be pivotal in various projects aligned with LLNL’s mission areas such as Strategic Deterrence, National Ignition Facility & Photon Science, and Global Security. These roles are situated within the Computational Engineering Division (CED) of the Engineering Directorate.

Positions are available at varying levels, depending on your knowledge and relevant experience. Additional responsibilities will be assigned for those hired at the higher level.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Evaluate and contribute to the performance of complex mechanical systems under high-rate loading, including laser-matter interaction, blast effects, and hypervelocity impact scenarios, as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Manage multiple technical tasks effectively with limited supervision, including the development of intricate, geometrically complex finite element models.
  • Apply extensive technical knowledge to steer the successful attainment of project objectives, focusing on the post-failure response of materials and structures under high-rate loads.
  • Conduct verification analyses to validate computational methods against analytical solutions, ensuring proper convergence and participating in rigorous technical peer reviews.
  • Engage in training, briefings, and other program-related events, contributing to discussions with sponsors, other DOE laboratories, and U. S. government agencies, which may entail occasional travel.
  • Adhere to security protocols for all classified and unclassified information with minimal guidance.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Additional Responsibilities for SES.3 Level:

  • Independently manage multiple technical tasks within a multidisciplinary team, where meeting commitments and deadlines is crucial for project success.
  • Utilize advanced technical knowledge and methodologies to drive the successful completion of projects and organizational objectives, acting as the primary technical contact for assigned tasks.
  • Resolve technical objectives and criteria to meet project goals effectively.
