About the job
Join Inertia as we seek talented Optical - Mechanical Engineers dedicated to enhancing the design and testing capabilities of high-power laser systems for our pioneering fusion energy program. Our goal is to develop the world's highest average power pulsed lasers, which will serve as the 'unit cell' of our future power plant. Collaborating with industry leaders, government entities, and academic institutions, we aim to construct a demonstrator beamline that achieves 10 kJ at 10 Hz with a 10% wall-plug efficiency, utilizing cutting-edge diode-pumped solid-state laser technology (DPSSL).
Initially, you will be responsible for creating test stands for various system components, including optical and thermal evaluations of the amplifier, testing pulsed semiconductor laser diode arrays, assessing high damage threshold optics, and developing manufacturing methods for a diverse array of optical components.
Primary Responsibilities:
Your role will encompass some or all of the following:
Design innovative, highly stable opto-mechanical systems for advanced high-power, high-energy laser systems.
Conduct comprehensive opto-mechanical analyses to enhance pointing stability, mitigate thermal drift, and address mounting stresses.
Implement heat flow, stress, and birefringence analyses using finite element analysis (FEA) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) tools such as COMSOL and Abaqus.
Generate detailed drawings with SolidWorks to facilitate the development and procurement of optical and mechanical components.
Devise test plans for thorough evaluation of your designs.
Collaborate with optical and systems engineering teams to deliver cohesive, integrated designs.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Optical Engineering, or a related discipline.
Proven design experience with precision opto-mechanical products.
Expertise in CAD and design-for-manufacturing methodologies.
Practical experimental and prototyping skills.
Salary & Benefits:
The salary range for this position is $120,000 - $225,000. Actual compensation will be determined based on skills, experience, and education.
We offer competitive compensation along with an exceptional benefits package, which includes medical, dental, and vision plans, company-paid holidays, a matching 401(k) plan, and more!
